Purchasing Concert Tickets on Alexa

Random Brief Project #1
Using Spotify on Alexa to purchase concert tickets

This is one of many small self-initiated projects to diversify my portfolio. The aim was to build on the knowledge of voice UI I had learnt through seminars and meet-ups.

I used Designercize.com to generate a short, randomised brief for me to work on. The generator gave me the design and what it was for, along with the intended audience.

As the brief stated the design was for a ticket purchasing site, I decided to focus on designing a shopping experience for a music concert. I performed the typical user journey of purchasing a concert ticket on four large ticket websites: See Tickets, The Ticket Factory, Ticketmaster and Viagogo. It took on average eleven steps to buy a standard ticket. To appeal to early adopters, I chose to design the shopping experience on the voice platform Alexa. By utilising voice commands, I hoped to increase the efficiency and reduce steps taken to purchase a concert ticket.

As a widely established music platform, I used the Spotify application on Alexa so users can query concert dates whilst listening to an artist. If a user purchases tickets frequently through Alexa, the Spotify application could learn user preferences such as standing or seated tickets, billing and shipping address to reduce the steps in the future.

I wanted to design two scenarios, one to show a user asking Alexa for an artists’ tour dates and prices, and a second to show the same user continuing to purchase the same artists’ concert tickets at a later date. The second scenario would highlight how to manage and amend a user’s current searches, to meet the requirement of designing a ‘Shopping Cart View’ for voice.

The prototyping process was inspired by Andrea Muttoni on the Alexa team at Amazon UK. In his talk, he discussed how to build an effective voice storyboard using process trees and voice cards. First, I created a process tree starting with the user listening to an artist through the Spotify app on an Amazon Echo, to booking a ticket to the artists’ concert. Then, I used the process tree to shape the user journey, complete with the user’s voice commands and Alexa’s responses. As this is designed for Voice, the user journey is not linear and users are free to return to previous stages of the journey to refine their preferences. I utilised the voice interaction features in Adobe XD to create a realistic experience from the voice cards.
